Interview with Sindri Snær Sigfússon of Seabear…
Jill interviews Sindri Snær Sigfússon of the Salad Days Music band to watch Seabear.
Jill Donenfeld: You’ve grown Seabear from a one-man gig into a collective of seven adorable Icelanders plus a few honorary members according to your myspace page. What were you doing before Seabear?
Sindri Snær Sigfússon: I was a confused teenager.
JD: Awww, well you seem to know what you’re into now. Were you cool in high school or a big ole’ dork?
SSS: I was cool because I used to skateboard and smoke. I think most of the cool kids I knew in high school ended [up] having really fucked up lives as adults. So if any young kids read this it’s fine to be a dork in high school!

JD: That’s very thoughtful. And what do your mothers think of your choice of career?
SSS: They are all very proud of us.
JD: And, as a confused teenager, you were into music? What’s the very first band you were in?
SSS: The One Lovers.
JD: Oh, I love the name! Very sweet. Where’d you get your current name?
SSS: I found it in one of my sketchbooks a few years ago when I was looking for a name for this project. I can’t remember where I got it from though.
JD: Is sketching a side project? A hobby? What are you doing when not recording?
SSS: I like to play and watch sports, like tennis and football (soccer), draw and paint; and we all like to meet up and have drinks together.
JD: What do you do to relax?
SSS: Drink whiskey and watch Poirot dvd’s.
JD: What’s a typical day like for you guys?
SSS: Well I can only speak for myself. I wake up, go to the studio, then I go home and eat and most nights I like to draw or paint.
JD: What bands are you listening to right now?
SSS: Icelandic bands like: Hjaltalín, Ólöf Arnalds and Múm. Right now I’m listening to Bruce Springsteen in the headphones.
JD: What’s the worst gig you ever played?
SSS: There was one of our first when we used a computer and the computer keep fucking up like playing the wrong song at the wrong time and not working.
JD: Ouch. That’s awful. When I get out of sync like that, it’s usually just because I’m not dressed for the weather. How do you choose what you’re going to wear on stage?
SSS: It depends if we are traveling or doing a one-off concert. When we toured I had three different outfits for three weeks—mostly cowboy shirts.
JD: That doesn’t sound like enough clothes. I wonder what your moms would think now. Then again, you are rock stars, which gives you a certain sense of entitlement, like only going between three shirts. What part of being up and coming rock stars excites you the most?
SSS: I’m not absolutely sure we’re up and coming rock stars but if we were it would be having a crew that set’s up all your equipment and sound checks for you. That would make everything so much easier.
JD: You guys are CERTAINLY up and coming rock stars, which brings me to probably my most important question: What would be the best possible thing a groupie could do to get into your greenroom?
SSS: Bring a case of beer and some lobster.
JD: I’ll spread the word.

Stevie Anderson says,
Could you try coming up with some more really, really dumb questions? I especially like the bit where you come over all Jeremy Paxman and say: “Awww … were you cool in high school or a big ole’ dork?” Great, great questioning. You really probed the heart of what Seabear are all about. I think you should really be trying for Radiohead next. Go on, you know you want to!
