Our Band Could Be Your Life…

It’s not often that we talk about films or documentaries on this site, but every now and again we watch something that we feel obligated to share. In this case I am referring to a documentary directed by Tim Irwin and produced by Keith Schieron in association with Rocket Fuel Films entitled We Jam Econo: The Story of The Minutemen.

I was aware of The Minutemen in name, but sadly knew very little about their story or their music.  A friend, whose opinion I value (don’t tell him), told me about this documentary and recommended I watch it.  I did as instructed and couldn’t have been more impressed.

This documentary details the story of The Minutemen through interviews and old concert footage. A lot of the story is told by Mike Watt as he drives around San Pedro in an Econoline Van visiting places that played a major part in the band’s history. This documentary not only tells us the story of a tremendous band, but more than anything it gives us a glimpse of what true friendship looks like.

Rest In Peace D. Boon.

Here is a little information about the clip above.

This is from the end of the WE JAM ECONO documentary, which tells the story of the legendary California punk rock group the Minutemen. At the end of the film here, we see bassist Mike Watt tell us that meeting D. Boon changed his life, much in the way that their fans were changed by their music.

As the film closes, we’re given an acoustic performance of “History Lesson Pt. II” from the album “Double Nickels on the Dime”. The song seems somewhat sad here as we say good by to one of the greatest rock bands of all time.

Closing out, Mike Watt notes happily that “we jam econo”. Rest in peace, D.

Wish I could watch that documentary. Check out Double Nickels On The Dime sometime. Despite its MANY tracks, there’s an abundance of gold waiting to be heard.
